Alex O'Donnell, counsellor in Swindon.
My name is Alex O’Donnell and I am a fully qualified counsellor and Registered Member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
I am bound by and subscribe to the BACP’s Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling, which ensures that I receive regular supervision, undertake continuous professional development and am committed to working in your best interest. I also hold a current Enhanced DBS Certificate.
My approach to counselling is integrative, relational and non-directive, which roughly translates as:
Integrative: I use different elements of counselling models and techniques to create an approach that is unique to your requirements. This helps create a more flexible way for us to work together and allows for a tailored response most appropriate to your needs. For those who know about counselling, I am largely Person-Centred, incorporating elements of the Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Systemic models along with Mindfulness.
Relational: The foundation of our work will be in the therapeutic relationship we create together – a collaboration based on trust, empathy and acceptance. With so much of our pain often stemming from our relationships with others (past and present), it’s increasingly recognised that healing can happen in relationship too. I hope to foster an environment which feels secure and supportive in order that we might explore your concerns together, with mutual curiosity and endeavour.
Non-directive: There was a time when the therapist was seen as the expert in the room, the one who could ‘cure’ or ‘fix’ the client’s problems with their psychological mastery. This approach does little to empower individuals to discover their own strengths and resources, which is key to sustaining personal growth and development. A non-directive approach is based on the idea that each individual has the capacity to create a more satisfying life for themselves. My role is to help you discover and access that part of yourself so that you can create your own solutions to your own unique challenges.
