How does it work? Where do I start?
It can be a daunting first step to pick up that phone or write that opening email, especially if this is your first experience of counselling. To ensure you feel safe, comfortable and fully informed, our first session together will be free. It gives us a chance to get to know one another a little so we can decide if working together is right for you and in your best interests. In this session you are invited to discuss what it is you want from counselling, your hopes and expectations, and I will listen to any questions or concerns you have and further explain how I work. I offer face-to-face, short term, long term and open-ended counselling for adults.
The therapeutic relationship is the bedrock of successful counselling, so I would advise you see a number of different counsellors before deciding which one is right for you. Take your time. Consider which encounter feels intuitively right and then make your choice.
If you decide you would like me to be your counsellor, I will go through and provide you with a standard counselling contract to establish our working alliance. Sessions are 50 minutes long and it’s recommended they take place weekly so you can get support on a regular basis. There are no hard and fast rules for the duration of counselling – some people feel they achieve what they want after just a few sessions, others find a lengthier, deeper encounter is more appropriate. This is something we can discuss during our initial session and at various stages throughout – often the counselling process itself can shift our perspective on what is required.
